This site collects as little as it can get away with. Here’s exactly what it does collect, why, and where it goes.
Analytics
This site uses Umami, a self-hosted, cookieless analytics tool. It records anonymised, aggregated information about visits — pages viewed, referring sites, rough location by country, device type — but not anything that identifies you individually, and it doesn’t use tracking cookies. The data stays on this site’s own server and is never shared with or sold to anyone.
Comments
Comments are handled by Remark42, also self-hosted. To comment, you sign in with an email address — no anonymous or throwaway posting is allowed, specifically to keep the discussion honest and identifiable. When you sign in, Remark42 stores your email address (used only to verify you and, if you choose, notify you of replies), your comment text, and your IP address (used for spam and abuse prevention). Comment data is not shared with third parties or used for advertising.
Right of reply and corrections
If you submit a right of reply, correction, or complaint through this site’s forms, we collect your name, contact email, and whatever you write. This is used to verify who you are and to review your submission before anything is published. Your response text may be published in full if accepted; your contact email is never published. Submission data is stored on this site’s own server and is not shared with third parties.
Transactional email — comment sign-in links, right of reply confirmations — is sent via AhaSend, an email delivery service. AhaSend processes your email address only to deliver these messages and does not use it for marketing.
Google Preferred Sources
This site has a button linking to Google’s own “Preferred Sources” feature. Clicking it takes you to a page on Google’s site, governed by Google’s own privacy policy — we don’t receive any data from this and can’t see who’s clicked it.
Hosting
This site is hosted on a server we control directly (not a third-party platform), based in Germany. Standard web server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested) are kept briefly for security and abuse prevention, then rotated out.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask what data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how it’s used. Email jason@scotlandthefeart.scot and we’ll deal with it directly — there’s no institutional bureaucracy here, just a response from the person who runs the site.
Changes to this policy
If what this site collects or how it’s used changes, this page will be updated and the date below will change.
